Monterey Regional Airport Gets Graphic With Seaside High School Student Art
New Youth Art Gallery Exhibit for Art at the Airport Program
MONTEREY, CA, November 28, 2023 – The Monterey Regional Airport gets graphic with the installation of a new student art exhibit in their Youth Art Gallery. “Getting Graphic at Seaside High” features works created by students in the Seaside High School Digital Media Program.
Led by instructor Mandee Scorpiniti, the Digital Media Program introduces students to several digital artforms, including photography, graphic design, illustration and video. In a classroom filled with computers, students master applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
A range of ages and skill levels are on display at the exhibition, starting with first-year Digital Media Design and Communication students, then second-year Advance Media Technology students, and finally, third year MPC ARTG 11 dual enrollment students who receive college credits while attending classes at Seaside High School.
“It is so great to see local high schools offering digital media classes, that not only encourage students’ creativity, but teach them advanced computer skills that may lead to future careers in design, marketing, illustration, video production or photography,” said Kathy Kopp, Youth Art Gallery Curator, Art at the Airport.
The exhibit has three main sections, including:
Photography. In this section, beginning students’ first assignment is dubbed “A Toy Story,” which challenged them to photograph toys from different perspectives. In the next assignment they were asked to experiment with various shutter speeds to capture both still and blurred motion. Second-year students were asked to shoot a series of images that required them to focus on a theme while following the rules of composition. Students selected their best shots, arranged them on a page, and added a typographic element to produce a pleasing photographic layout.
Digital Collage. These pieces showcase digital composite techniques practiced by second- and third-year students. Students were encouraged to take a deeper look at who they are as individuals and how that might be expressed visually. Using Photoshop, they combined their own photos with surrealistic elements to create interesting collages that portray their unique identities.
Design and Illustration. Other works in the exhibit include logo design and landscapes created in Adobe Illustrator by first-year students as part of their introduction to commercial design and illustration. Students had to use their design and computer skills to produce a simple graphic or logo that represents their personality and render a landscape with the help of their computer and a vivid imagination.
The exhibit will be available to view until late February 2024 at the MRY terminal.
