Monterey Regional Airport Celebrates Youth Art Month this March with a New Youth Art Exhibit
Featuring the works of Marina Vista Elementary Arts Academy, Transitional Kindergarten through Sixth Grade
MONTEREY, CA. (Feb. 13, 2023) — Monterey Regional Airport starts Youth Art Month with a new exhibit this March. Youth Art Month promotes art and art education in the United States. It is observed in March, with thousands of American schools participating.
Monterey Regional Airport has displayed Youth Art Exhibits for over 30 years! The early shows were curated in partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium to showcase marine artwork created by local school children. Over the years, a dedicated wall at the Airport has displayed various youth artwork, from paper sculptures and masks, to painted shoes, photography, and collage.
Through the Art at the Airport program, the Youth Art Exhibits have featured artwork by all age groups from Kindergarten through high school and college. Public schools, private campuses, and other local youth groups (like YAC, Rancho Cielo, and Hijos Del Sol) encourage young people’s creative expression. In 2018, the wall displayed regional winners of the annual Congressional Art Competition, sponsored by local congressman Jimmy Panetta.
The Airport’s current Youth Art Exhibit features work from Marina Vista Elementary Arts Academy, Transitional Kindergarten through Sixth Grade students. It displays the wide variety of media and projects the children are exposed to and how their artistic skills develop. Marina Vista Elementary Arts Academy is a California State “Turn Around School.” This means that under their principal’s leadership, Cristina Campanaro, the teachers use art projects to support their curriculum. The school also has a dedicated art instructor, Rory Woods, who provides additional art training in a classroom devoted to art. His bulletin boards are covered with the student’s work, a colorful reminder of their accomplishments!
“From Monterey to Carmel Valley and out through the Salinas Valley, our central coast communities offer wonderful schools and organizations that support our student’s creative expression,” said Kathy Kopp, Curator of Art at the Airport. “Many excellent teachers and community leaders work hard to provide art programs for our kids. Monterey Regional Airport provides this big, wonderful wall in its terminal building to support schools in sharing their students’ work with the traveling public!”
